Curly hair. Love it or hate it, curls have made a MAJOR comeback in recent years!
Growing up as a mixed girl comes with certain trials and tribulations, but my hair was far and away the biggest struggle I have ever had! You see, my mom has Victoria’s Secret Angel hair without really having to do much to it. I had thick, wild curls since the day I was born. My mom always did the best as she could, but from third grade on, it was up to me! I never got a hair cut and then my junior year of high school I got a trim and it spiraled up to nothing. I used Dep #8 gel that made it look wet and crunchy. I relaxed it in college and damn near all it fell out. I got weekly blowouts for modeling jobs and now that I am living that mom life, I am embracing my curls more and more and focused on getting them back to a happy, bouncy and moisturized place.
I recently went to MaduSalon in downtown San Francisco. MaduSalon specialized in curly hair, regardless of ethnicity. From the second I sat down in Devon’s chair, I felt at ease and wanted to pick her brain. I now feel like I have a great grasp on how to do my hair so that my curls lack frizz and have major bounce! Since curls are making a comeback, I wanted to share all the tips and tricks I learned with all of you.
What advice would you give parents of mixed children who have a different hair texture than you?
Take them to a salon based on their hair type and ask advice on products and how to style. Also, have them pay attention and start to do it on their own at a young age. If you are educated on their specific hair type you will be able to guide them and limit frustration.
What products should I use?
Water-based products rinse really well. We use DevaCurl “no-poo”, deep conditioner and gel. All DevaCurl products are toxin-free which was really important to me.
Feel Free to Leave in Conditioner
We used a deep conditioner on wet hair and just left it in as a curl primer. My hair stayed super hydrated and I only needed a limited amount of gel.
How should I dry my hair?
Air drying is best, but if you diffuse it use it on high heat low air. The whipping of the hair is what causes frizz.
How often should I shampoo?
Only 1-2 times per week. No more!
