5 Tips to Help You Stay Healthy and Fit While Traveling

Stay Healthy on the Road

Where in the world is Taylor Walker Fit?! [sung to the ‘Carmen San Diego’ theme song] Every week it is a guessing game as to where in world I will be. Is it exciting? Yes, but it can also be exhausting and leave you sick with a wicked sinus infection like this week.

I left for California last Tuesday only to have my four day trip turn into a seven day trip.  I was left to search for a laundromat and a place to get a fresh blow out in LV, and it was an good ‘ol fashion adventure to say the least. That my friends is the less than glamorous part of the modeling industry. You have to be flexible and OK with throwing your schedule out the window. You also have to be flexible and comfortable with keeping your health and fitness your number one priority. It takes a little bit of work, but once you get the habit of it. Living this life becomes second nature.

In my early years of hustle and bustle I did not give much thought into what I put into my body. Food was portrayed as food, not fuel, and any drive through would suffice. These days, processed food leaves me feeling just as low as an alcohol induced hangover; so I wanted to share a few health tips for all of my road warriors out there.

Remember…Small changes can yield large rewards!

Give these a try on your next trip and let me know how you feel afterwards! It should be easier to bounce back and you should have more energy to take on whatever life throws at you when you return home.

Be Prepared: Stop at your local health food store or bring your favorite healthy snacks like nuts, whole food bars or fresh fruit with you. This will help get you from one meal to the next and avoid the mid-day crash. Read your labels and make sure you are prepared to battle the pastries and unhealthy options that are usually provided at work. I love an apple with pre-portioned nut butters, Lara or Perfect Bars and 100 calorie almond packs.

Stay Health on a Work Trip

Hydrate: After stepping off an airplane you will most likely feel dehydrated. Last week I was in three completely different climates: L.A., Vegas and Miami. My allergies have gone rouge and the only thing that helps beat the symptoms and kicks the jet lag to the curb is downing as much H20 as I can consume.

Hotel Room Meals

Do Your Research: There is nothing more fun than exploring a new city. Do your research on healthy options in the area!  Download Postmates or Uber Eats to have a healthy meal delivered right to your hotel room. Convenience is key and these apps make it simple to stay on track. Today for example: I ordered a green smoothie, a macro lunch and found a restaurant in my area called LYFE Kitchen.

Plan Your Workouts: Download the Mind Body App or Classpass and sign up for classes and pre pay at least a day in advance. Sometimes we do not feel like going to a workout after a long day, but if you paid for it the chances are much higher for you to fit in your sweat session!

Have an Adventure You can turn your work trip into a mini-vacation. Even when you think you “do not have the time”. How often have you found yourself taking a trip to the hotel bar or ordering room service?  This country is incredible and there is something fun to do in every city! If you find yourself traveling for work, take advantage of a new city and explore the beauty around you. I have been going to Las Vegas to work with Zappos for two years and I have never once ventured further than the strip. I finally did and look where it took me! Just some food for thought.

If there is one thing I have learned over these past three years it is that you need to find what works for you and what works for your body. I do know there are two things that work for every one, and they happen to be the only two things you will NEVER regret: a workout and a healthy meal!
