Did you know?
The US has the highest maternal mortality rate among developed countries. There are about 23.8 deaths per 100,000 live births as of 2021 and that number is 3-4x higher within black communities.
C-sections are on the rise. Approximately 32% of all births in the U.S. are delivered by cesarean section. Nearly double what the World Health Organization considers ideal (10-15%).
Significant racial disparities exist. Black women are often given less pain management care, face longer wait times and receive fewer prenatal visits compared to their white counterparts. These disparities contribute to higher rates of preterm births, low weights and maternal and infant mortality among Black women and their babies.
There are considerable variations in state policies and practices from state to state. Some states have better access to maternal healthcare, more generous parental leave policies, and lower intervention rates, while others have higher rates of c-section, fewer birth centers and limited access to prenatal care. This variation can significantly impact maternal and infant outcomes depending on where a woman lives.
About 1 in 8 women in the US experiences postpartum depression, though the rate is higher among low-income women, teenage mothers, and women of color. Despite its prevalence, many women do not receive adequate screening and treatment for postpartum depression, which can have long-term effects on both mother and child.
